Vasily Vasilevich Konovalenko was born on July 5, 1929, the fifth child and only son of a Russian mother and a Ukrainian father living in Petrovka, a small town in east-central Ukraine. While he was a toddler the family moved to Donetsk (then known as Stalino), a much larger and more cosmopolitan city in eastern Ukraine, to better their lives and opportunities.
Vasily Konovalenko worked at the former Kirovsky, currently Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he created opera and ballet scenery.
